Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey were overlooked by Gareth Southgate.

Gareth Southgate has picked his 23-man England squad for this summer’s World Cup at Russia, overlooking Newcastle United duo Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey.
Plenty of pundits have backed the inclusion of former Liverpool midfielder Shelvey after his exploits this season, while many on Tyneside believe Lascelles proves to be a much better option than England’s current centre-backs.

The 24-year-old has captained Newcastle to tenth in the Premier League table, but Southgate has decided to overlook the uncapped Englishman as well as ball-playing midfielder Shelvey.
In reaction to Southgate’s squad, Newcastle’s official Twitter account posted a cheeky message to the duo, posting a picture of both players and composing “Enjoy your summer, lads. You’ve earned it.”
Instead of former Nottingham Forest defender Lascelles, Southgate has decided to call-up Chelsea skipper Gary Cahill, Manchester City stars Kyle Walker and John Stones, Leicester’s Harry Maguire and Manchester United’s Phil Jones.
In midfield, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, Tottenham’s Eric Dier, Manchester City’s Fabian Delph and Crystal Palace loanee Ruben Loftus-Cheek were preferred to Shelvey.
The duo did not even make it onto the reserve list, with Burnley’s James Tarkowski and midfielder Lewis Cook and Jake Livermore picked over the Toon duo.
