Newcastle were beaten 2-1 at Nottingham Forest on Friday evening.
Newcastle United lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest in controversial fashion on Friday evening, prompting responses from Magpies players on Twitter after the game.
Rafael Benitez’s side were looking to claim a victory having been beaten by Blackburn Rovers last weekend and knocked out of the EFL Cup by Hull City in midweek, and played their part in a bizarre encounter against Forest.
Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie celebrates scoring their first goal with Isaac Hayden
The Magpies were down to ten men early on as Jonjo Shelvey was sent off for an off the ball altercation with Henri Lansbury, but Karl Darlow saved Nicklas Bendtner’s resulting penalty.
Newcastle then took the lead through Matt Ritchie, but again gave away a penalty and had a man sent off, with Paul Dummett fouling Lansbury when through on goal – but Lansbury also had his penalty saved by Darlow.

The Magpies were facing an uphill battle in the second half, and after Bendtner had equalised, former Forest defender Jamaal Lascelles put through his own goal to hand the home side all three points.
Given the contentious nature of the red cards and the penalties, Newcastle fans felt hard done by after the final whistle – and players took to Twitter after the final whistle to send messages to supporters.

Full back DeAndre Yedlin admitted he was gutted to have lost, praising the travelling fans for their incredible support at the City Ground.
Centre back Ciaran Clark also praised the fans, but also suggested that the less said about the game the better given the refereeing decisions against Newcastle, whilst midfielder Isaac Hayden suggested there were ‘difficult circumstances’ in the game, another nod to the red cards and penalties.
