Newcastle United made it three Championship wins in a row on Saturday evening as they beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at St. James’ Park.

After wins over Reading and Bristol City had handed Newcastle confidence following a shaky start to the season, and their confidence was on show on Saturday against Chris Hughton’s Brighton side.

The Magpies took the lead in the first half as defender Jamaal Lascelles headed the ball home from a Matt Ritchie free kick, before Jonjo Shelvey scored a superb second with an inch-perfect free kick.

Sam Baldock’s red card ended any Brighton hopes of a fightback, and Newcastle are now picking up momentum having moved up into fourth place in the Championship table this weekend.

After the game, a host of Newcastle players took to Twitter to give their views on the win, with new signing DeAndre Yedlin celebrating his debut having signed from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week, as the American came on as an 88th minute substitute against Brighton.

Goalscorer Lascelles celebrated the win by praising the fans rather than commenting on his goal, whilst defensive partner Chancel Mbemba was glad to get a win before heading off on international duty with DR Congo.

Other players such as Jamie Sterry, Jesus Gamez and Isaac Hayden also passed on messages to supporters after a comfortable win, whilst there was also reaction from striker Dwight Gayle.

Newcastle’s top goalscorer so far this season, Gayle missed the game through concussion but celebrated a ‘great win’ in his absence.
