Newcastle United posted a touching tribute to Jonjo Shelvey on Instagram after it was confirmed he had completed a permanent move to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday – prompting Fabian Schar, Nick Pope and Isaac Hayden to react.

Shelvey, 30, was out of contract in the summer at Newcastle. He has decided to move on, with Forest nabbing their second Toon player in a month – after luring Chris Wood to the club on a loan-to-buy deal. Shelvey joins until 2025.

It comes after the England international spent the last seven years on Tyneside, joining the club from Swansea in January 2016. He has gone on to play 202 times, helping Newcastle return to the Premier League – scoring 18 goals.

Indeed, Shelvey also laid on 25 assists – despite largely playing from the base of the midfield. An impressive return and now, he will be tasked with keeping Steve Cooper’s Forest in the Premier League. The Toon posted on Instagram.

The end of an era. Shelvey has played a really pivotal role in a difficult time for Newcastle, under the ownership of Mike Ashley. Often a player that Toon fans could look at as the driving force in their midfield – a player they could relate to.

Injuries have hampered the ex-Liverpool man this season but he has really been a crucial player for Eddie Howe’s side. Even last season, helping them avoid relegation last term and eventually finish in a more comfortable 11th position.

His importance is not underrated by his teammates. Even, among new signings – and those that have moved on. Pope joined in the summer, but reacted with “what a guy”. Hayden also commented, while Schar said he is a “magic player”.
