Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow has told the Daily Mail that he simply cannot go back to sitting on the bench again.
Darlow has been given a regular run in Newcastle’s team after Martin Dubravka picked up an injury before the season started.
The English stopper has grabbed the opportunity with both hands, with Darlow now thriving in Newcastle’s team.
And the 30-year-old has suggested that if he does get dropped again, he may have to consider his future, as he believes he is good enough to play regular football elsewhere.
“This is an opportunity for me to show what I can do and, after that, it’s a decision that will be taken out of my hands,” he admitted.
“As long as I know I have done as much as I can do then that’s OK. But I couldn’t resign myself to being No 2 again.
“The ambition is inside me and I have the confidence in my ability to be a No 1 somewhere and, if the situation comes around where I am going to be a No 2 for a long period, then I would do my best to come back as a No 1.”
Darlow’s chances of staying as Newcastle number one choice look fairly limited when Dubravka does return, but that is through no fault of his own.
Darlow has proven his quality with his current run in the Magpies’ team, where he has consistently performed to a high level.
However, Dubravka is one of the very best stoppers in the Premier League and Bruce will surely be keen to get the Slovakian back involved sooner rather than later, when he is fit.
