Goals from Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko sealed Newcastle United a shock 2-0 win at Manchester City in Wednesday’s fourth round Capital One Cup tie.
Rob Elliot 7/10 – Made an excellent save from Stefan Jovetic from close-range, on a night when he expected to be far busier.
Daryl Janmaat 7/10 – Roamed free down the right flank, delivering a number of teasing crosses to trouble the opposition defence.
Fabricio Coloccini 710 – Saw the post save his blushes when his sliced clearance could have gifted City an equaliser, but was otherwise highly effective in shutting down Edin Dzeko.
Paul Dummett 7/10 – Switched to centre-back from the left and didn’t look at all out of place.
Massadio Haidara 7/10 – Looked just as impressive getting forward as in defence, with Samir Nasri offering him few problems.
Ryan Taylor 8/10 – The success story of the night, his comeback from injury after 26 months out couldn’t have gone much better. Set up the opener, showed some great touches and then made a heroic block late on to keep the home side out.
Mehdi Abeid 710 – Full of running and strong in the tackle, looking the part of a first-team regular.
Jack Colback 7/10 – A solid, if unspectacular, performance in the middle, as he did well to keep the imposing Yaya Toure quiet until the City man was replaced at the hour.
Gabriel Obertan 8/10 – The Frenchman’s fine run of form continues, with his pace and guile causing Aleksandar Kolarov serious problems for the entire 90 minutes.
Adam Armstrong 7/10 – Belied his tender age with an assured outing as the lone man up top, working the City defenders with a non-stop display of graft.
Rolando Aarons 7.5/10 – Showed no ill-effects from the recent hamstring problem, showcasing his threatening skill and pace for the brilliant fifth-minute opener.
SUBSITUTES
Sammy Ameobi (Aarons 45) 7/10 -Followed up his game-changing performance at Spurs with another composed outing, picking out Sissoko for the second goal.
Moussa Sissoko (Janmaat 64) 7.5/10 – Was brought on to help sure up the midfield but instead made the game safe with a well-taken strike.
Emmanuel Riviere (Armstrong 65) 7/10 – Gave Pardew what he was after, with his fresh legs keeping the opposition on their toes for the final 25 minutes.
