Midtjylland star Jens Cajuste could still be on his way to the Premier League with Newcastle United planning a bid in excess of the £12 million they offered in August, as reported by Homme du Match.

January cannot come soon enough for the slaloming, spring-heeled Sweden international.

Cajuste, in his own words, was bitterly ‘disappointed’ after missing out on a move to England during the summer transfer window.

Having made just two league appearances in Midtjylland colours since then, the 22-year-old, box-to-box midfielder is counting down the days until the transfer window swings open again in three months.

“The Premier League would have been fantastic fun,” Cajuste, who featured for Sweden at Euro 2020, admitted earlier this month.

“I was disappointed and I hoped to take the next step. But I have to accept it and make the best of the situation.

“I felt that I was ready to take the next step. But that’s how it is in football. I have to accept this.”

Will Jens Cajuste be a Premier League player in 2022?

Leeds failed with an £11 million offer before turning their attention to Lewis O’Brien – a transfer pursuit which ended in equally unsuccessful fashion – while Brentford opted to sign Cajuste’s Midtjylland midfield partner Frank Onyeka instead.

Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers were also linked but, according to Homme du Match, it is Newcastle who appear to be the most likely destination for Cajuste as things stand.

It is no secret that the under-fire Steve Bruce is crying out for midfield reinforcements and Cajuste would provide both steel and skill at the heart of a rather lightweight Newcastle side, snapping into tackles one minute before starting counters with one of those trademark barnstorming runs.

Only Lionel Messi completed more dribbles in last season’s Champions League than Cajuste.

It is understood that Newcastle are already putting plans in place for a January bid, preparing an offer in excess of the £12 million they submitted in August.
