Newcastle are now said to be interested in signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as Eddie Howe aims to improve his attack.
That is according to The Times, who believe the Magpies have been left impressed by the Georgia international’s stunning performances for Napoli since his £10m move from Dinamo Batumi back in July.
What’s the story?
Well, many doubted Kvaratskhelia’s chances of adapting to a top European league such as Serie A.
However, the 21-year-old has been a revelation in Naples, earning the nickname Kvaradona in tribute to Argentina and Napoli legend Diego Maradona.
Kvaratskhelia has scored eight goals, also providing ten assists, in his first 17 appearances for Napoli, while he tore Trent Alexander-Arnold apart in the 4-1 Champions League win over Liverpool in Group A.
The Times believe Newcastle have made the Napoli No.77 their No.1 target for 2023 as they look to build on their current position of third in the Premier League.
It is also said that the Magpies heavily scouted Kvaratskhelia before the start of the World Cup, and were left amazed by his remarkable displays.
However, Napoli are currently trying to tie him down to a new contract, despite the fact his current terms last until June 2027 – presumably, this is to increase his salary, and make him more likely to remain in Naples.
The Times add that Kvaratskhelia is currently valued at £50m.
In additional to Maradona, the Georgian has also been compared to Mohamed Salah by Fabio Capello.
The Italian – who used to manage England – said: “Kvaratskhelia, in his movements, reminds me of a young Mohamed Salah.”
