Newcastle United are now reportedly leading the race to sign Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, with Tottenham being linked with a move for the Slovakia centre-back since 2021.

According to CalcioMercatoWeb, the Magpies are ‘top candidates’ to sign the Serie A titan as Skriniar looks set to leave Inter in the January transfer window having failed to sign a new contract, with Newcastle in line to land a potential bargain in the winter market.

As reported by L’Equipe, PSG made a £70m offer for Skriniar in the summer transfer window that eventually amounted to nothing as the 27-year-old defender remainder at Inter. Yet it now looks like the defender will leave for good in the coming weeks.

And Newcastle appear to be at the front of the queue for Skriniar, with CalcioMercatoWeb stating that Eddie Howe’s side are ready to propose a big contract offer to sign the former Sampdoria star in order to win the race for the Inter superstar in January.

Such a move would be quite the statement from Newcastle, yet signing Skriniar will also annoy Tottenham and Antonio Conte, with TuttoMercatoWeb reporting that the Italian manager was desperate to bring his former Inter centre-back to north London.

However, it now seems that Newcastle are the front-runners to land Skriniar, and a potential signing could be one of the biggest moves PIF have made yet since taking over the Premier League club last year, with the defender one of the best in his position in Europe.

Newcastle have been very smart in their transfer business since the Saudi takeover last year, with Howe and his team making the right moves to improve the squad rather than deals that will grab headlines and serve as rocket fuel for the club’s worldwide reputation. Yet Skriniar could change all of that, but not in a bad way.

Indeed, Skriniar is regarded by many as one of the best centre-backs in world football, and adding such a player to an already stacked defensive unit could be an incredible prospect for Newcastle that could serve to boost not only their European ambitions but also their goal to finish in the top-four.
