Newcastle United reportedly have a plan to sign Chelsea midfielder Jorginho for free in the summer, with the Italian international currently expected to leave west London when his contract expires.

According to Sky Italia, the Blues are set to overhaul their entire midfield in 2023 with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante’s deals both set to end at the end of this season, with Newcastle already weighing up a scheme to sign the former for free in the summer transfer window.

The Daily Mail have recently reported that Newcastle have made the £57m Premier League superstar their main transfer target for 2023, with a move potentially on the cards as early as next month. However, this latest update seems to indicate that a deal will likely happen in the summer.

With Newcastle expected to focus on other areas of the pitch in January, it would make sense to wait until the end of the season to sign Jorginho, with a top midfielder such as the former Napoli star something that would be more welcome come the post-season.

Indeed, Jorginho himself could also be more responsive to a move to Newcastle in the summer, with the Magpies on course to qualify for Europe next season and maybe even clinch a UEFA Champions League spot if Eddie Howe’s side can strengthen well enough in January.

As a result, Newcastle’s latest plot to sign Jorginho makes a lot of sense, with a summer move much more likely to see the Italian agree to a move to St. James Park, especially if the Magpies do the unthinkable and manage to qualify for the Champions League.

Newcastle are yet to really push the boat out with their new wealth under the PIF regime, yet signing Jorginho would do just that, with the midfielder still having plenty left in the tank to make a massive impact on the Magpies in 2023.

A European champion with both Chelsea and Italy, Jorginho brings experience and a winning mentality to a young squad that needs both if they’re to take themselves to the next level, with the midfielder also a player who could be exceptional under Howe’s coaching.
