Yoan Gouffran could be set for a contract renewal at Newcastle United, despite his patchy form, while fans wait on new signings.
With pre-season training now on the horizon, Newcastle United’s only signing of the summer remains a permanent move for winger Christian Atsu.
The Times had reported that the loan signing of Tammy Abraham was secured, too, but the Chelsea man has since suggested – to the Daily Mail – that his future is far from certain.
And Newcastle fans are understandably starting to get the jitters after previous disappointments in the transfer market.
The situation was perhaps not helped by the club’s announcement on Friday that talks are underway with Yoan Gouffran for a new deal, despite a patchy season in the Championship.
The Chronicle claimed earlier in the summer that Rafa Benitez was chasing numerous winger targets, but that looks somewhat less likely now with Atsu, Matt Ritchie, Rolando Aarons and potentially Gouffran on board.
Indeed, Newcastle’s success in the second tier last term was built on a strong summer, when key men Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle arrived early, in time for the start of pre-season.
And, as the Abraham deal drags on and Newcastle look to give the uninspiring Gouffran a contract renewal, supporters might start to wonder if these increasingly worrying signs could lead to a season of struggle.
