Newcastle must target Kieran Tierney again amid Brendan Rodgers links

Newcastle United will reportedly turn to Brendan Rodgers should Rafa Benitez leave St James’ Park.

With Newcastle in the relegation zone in the Premier League, it would be no surprise if Brendan Rodgers was not as keen on a St James’ Park switch as the board would hope he would be.

The Daily Mirror reported earlier this month that the Celtic boss is on the Magpies’ radar if Rafa Benitez leaves. But with the Hoops enjoying an incredible amount of success under Rodgers while Newcastle continue to struggle, it is not clear why the Northern Irishman would want to leave Parkhead.

Mike Ashley arguably needs to be looking to make a major statement in the transfer market if he hopes to lure Rodgers away from Celtic. And one way that he could undoubtedly send a message to his reported managerial target is sanction a move for one of the Bhoys’ biggest stars.

The Daily Star reported in 2017 that Benitez was keen on signing Kieran Tierney. And the Magpies should consider making a fresh move for the Celtic left-back in January or next summer.

It admittedly seems unlikely that they will tempt Tierney away from the Scottish Premiership champions. With the defender playing for his boyhood club, it is surely going to take a special offer to make him even consider a move – and Newcastle will undoubtedly have to smash their transfer record by some way if they hope to have a bid accepted.

But Tierney would be a phenomenal signing for Newcastle. He is already an exceptional defender – who can also play anywhere across the back line if required – and is surely going to be Scott Brown’s successor as captain once the midfielder hangs up his boots.

The Magpies arguably need to strengthen their options at left-back and Tierney would make their strongest lineup considerably better. It appears inevitable that he is going to be playing in the Premier League one day – provided that he wants to move – and Newcastle being the ones to take him would be an incredible achievement given how unlikely it looks right now.

It is not going to be at all easy to complete a move, but if Newcastle want to land Rodgers, they need to make the Celtic boss sit up and take notice as staying with the Hoops is definitely the more appealing option right now.
