Newcastle United have reportedly been offered the chance to bring AC Milan’s Laxalt to the Premier League – he’s shining in the Copa America.
Yet again, Newcastle United are heading into the transfer window crying out for a left-back.
The failed Antonio Barreca experiment once again leaves The Magpies short of depth and quality on the flanks with Paul Dummett the only recognised left-back available.
Fortunately, Diego Laxalt is available.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle will be offered the chance to sign the belligerent, braided Uruguayan left-back after a difficult season at AC Milan in which he started just six Serie A games.
Laxalt joined Milan last summer from Genoa for a fee of £15 million and, though he struggled in the famous red and white shirt, his performances at international level could hardly be further removed.
The one-time Inter Milan youngster caught the eye at last summer’s World Cup with his swashbuckling, tough-tackling style betraying a typically obstinate Uruguayan spirit in the body of a speedy and skilful wideman.
And Laxalt did his reputation no harm at all with a fabulous performance in Uruguay’s 4-0 Copa America thrashing of Ecuador on Sunday. A constant threat down the left hand side, Ecuador simply couldn’t deal with his pace and power while he neutralised Antonio Valencia at the other end.
On this evidence, Newcastle shouldn’t miss their chance to finally solve a problem position.
