Newcastle must rue not signing ex-Manchester City ace Javairo Dilrosun

Newcastle United were one of the teams reportedly interested in signing Javairo Dilrosun ahead of the summer.

It was reported by The Sun in March that Newcastle were one of the teams looking at signing Manchester City youngster Javairo Dilrosun once his contract at the Etihad expired in the summer.

The Sun’s report suggested that the Magpies could have landed Dilrosun for just £1 million. But ultimately, the 20-year-old ended up heading to the Bundesliga to join Hertha Berlin.

It is not clear how serious Newcastle were about signing Dilrosun or whether they even made an approach for the starlet, but given the start that he has made to life in Germany’s top flight, Rafa Benitez would probably be forgiven for kicking himself over not getting something done.

While Newcastle find themselves in the relegation zone and still awaiting their first win in the Premier League this season, Dilrosun has made a remarkable start with the Old Lady.

He provided an assist on his debut in the away win at Schalke, a goal in the 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg, and two assists in the 4-2 win over Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend.

Dilrosun currently tops the assist charts in Germany and only four players across all of Europe’s major leagues have set up more goals this term.

It is entirely possible that Newcastle made a big attempt to get Dilrosun in through the St James’ Park door this summer and he decided that Hertha was the most appealing option on the table.

But if the Magpies decided against pursuing the youngster after the initial interest, then perhaps they should be kicking themselves over what would unquestionably be a glaring mistake during what was an incredibly underwhelming summer.
