According to a recent report from the Daily Star, Newcastle have joined the hunt to sign Manchester City youngster Oleksandr Zinchenko this summer but are seemingly needing to play catch up with Wolves placing a £16 million bid for the 21-year-old.

Zinchenko is not yet one of the star names in Pep Guardiola’s squad at the Etihad Stadium, but he did earn a number of opportunities last season, making 14 appearances in all competitions for the Cityzens, so it would appear that City believe that he has an extremely bright future ahead of him.

Nevertheless, it seems that the Premier League champions are willing to sell, with Wolves having a £16 million deal in place, according to the Daily Star, while Newcastle are also interested with the Ukraine international yet to make up his mind on his future.

And while they still seemingly have a chance of scuppering Nuno Espirito Santo’s side’s hopes of completing a deal, Newcastle must seriously consider matching the £16 million offer on the table.

With the signs suggesting that Rafa Benitez is once again working with a restricted budget, the Magpies need to be extremely shrewd in the transfer market but must also capitalise when a fantastic opportunity presents itself.

Zinchenko may be somewhat unproven, but what he has shown during his brief career suggests that he could be steal at £16 million. His versatility in particular, would make him a superb signing given that Benitez may not be able to get as many players in as he would like.

The youngster is capable of playing almost anywhere in the midfield, or in a slightly advanced position, or even at full-back so could be a great addition, even if matching Wolves’ reported bid appears to be something of a gamble at this stage.
