Newcastle United were reportedly keen to sign Kyle Scott from Premier League giants Chelsea when Rafa Benitez was still in charge.
Chelsea bid ‘farewell to five’ on Monday, announcing on their official website that five players were leaving Stamford Bridge with their contracts expiring on July 1.
Though while speculation will ramp up with both Gary Cahill and Gonzalo Higuain officially on the market, the sudden availability of Kyle Scott is unlikely to generate the same sort of attention. But his departure from the Premier League giants will not have gone unnoticed on Tyneside.
The Sun claimed at the start of June that Newcastle United were looking to bring in the 21-year-old midfielder on a bargain deal.
And with Scott now officially unattached, a Newcastle side who find themselves without a manager and uncertain of what the immediate future holds may be at risk of missing out on Scott. After all, it is only a matter of time before rival clubs cotton on to the fact that a player who has won five trophies with Chelsea at youth level is available for absolutely nothing.
Scott might not have made the great at Stamford Bridge but that doesn’t mean he is set for a life milling around the lower leagues. Kevin De Bruyne, Declan Rice, Mo Salah and co did aright after being discarded by The Blues after all.
A former Southampton youngster who has represented England, America and Ireland at international level, Scott has real potential and would be a fine addition for a club whose transfer strategy, for better or for worse, revolves around snapping up budding talents for bargain fees.
But Newcastle must move fast with the sort of decisiveness they are hardly renowned for showing.
