Newcastle United midfielder Mohamed Diame has expressed his delight to the club’s official website at getting off the mark for the Magpies in last night’s EFL Cup tie against Preston North End. However, the Senegalese international doesn’t want the goals the stop there as he looks ahead to the rest of the season.

Newcastle hit North End for six at St. James’ Park, their second 6-0 win of the season, and 29-year-old Diame got the Magpies’ second and fifth goals. But despite Newcastle’s free-scoring start to the season, these were Diame’s first goals for the club after being deployed in an advanced midfield role.

And, in an interview with Newcastle’s official website, Diame appeared keen to replicate the form he showed in the cup tie against the Lilywhites.

He said: “I’m happy to have scored two, and I hope that that will continue.

“When you’re a football player and you’re playing forward, you know you need to score goals or at least give assists, so of course mentally, it’s tough, it’s hard.

“But you need to keep going, keep working, and that’s what the manager told me. The most important thing is to keep getting the chances, and the goals will come. Tonight, I’ve scored two so I’m happy.”

Diame has a chance to repeat his heroics against the same opposition when Newcastle visit Deepdale in the Championship this Saturday. The Magpies will be gunning for a seventh win in a row in all competitions after reaching the summit of the league table.

Preston, however, will no doubt provide a tougher resistance at their home ground. Having been reduced to ten men in the first half on Tyneside, they went on to concede five.
