Newcastle want Merit Demiral and the defender’s future is now up in the air with Atalanta declining the permanent option in his loan deal.
Newcastle want to add another centre back this summer but their pursuit of Lille defender Sven Botman is proving very frustrating.
That means Eddie Howe may need to target alternative centre backs this summer.
There have been a number of names suggested, including the likes of Nathan Ake and Lloyd Kelly, but Newcastle could look towards Italy.
Newcastle want Merit Demiral
Newcastle are keen on signing centre back Merih Demiral according to report from Italian outlet Calciomercato.
It’s stated that Newcastle could chase a £17million deal for Demiral this summer with the idea of him partnering Dan Burn.
Demiral is right-footed and may be seen as the ideal complement to the left-footed Burn.
Goal now claim that Atalanta have decided to turn down the chance to sign Demiral permanently.
Demiral spent this last season on loan at Atalanta with a view to a permanent stay but the Serie A side seemingly aren’t convinced.
That means Demiral heads back to Juventus with his future unclear, but the Turin giants are allegedly willing to send him elsewhere.
That would certainly play into Newcastle’s hands, especially as Juventus want to raise funds for their own signings.
Demiral may end up coming even cheaper than expected with Newcastle prepared to make their move.
The Turkish international had impressed with Sassuolo and then showed promise with Juventus.
Now 24, Demiral is in danger of becoming something of a nomad.
Despite playing for six clubs – Alcanenense, Sporting B, Alanyaspor, Sassuolo, Juventus and Atalanta – Demiral has never played more than 30 games in a season and never more than 45 games for one club.
Demiral has struggled to find a settled home now and Atalanta’s decision only adds to that.
Newcastle could swoop in and take full advantage, hoping that Demiral settles and shows his pull potential.
