Is Antonio Conte staying at Tottenham Hotspur? That’s what the Lilywhites’ fanbase have been asking in recent weeks and with a little help from Newcastle United, possibly.
Newcastle did Tottenham a massive favour by beating Arsenal 2-0 at St James’s Park on Monday night.
In doing so, Spurs are now huge favourites to pip their North London rivals to fourth place in the Premier League and, more importantly, Champions League qualification.
Conte’s side are two points clear of Arsenal ahead of facing relegated Norwich City on the final day this weekend, meaning that even a point at Carrow Road would effectively guarantee them a spot in Europe’s elite competition.
According to The Times, people inside Tottenham are now confident that a top-four finish would result in Conte – linked to Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks – staying put.
The report adds that the Italian manager is set for a personal bonus of around £2.5 million if he secures Champions League qualification, leaving him minorly in debt to the heroics produced by Newcastle players on Tyneside earlier this week.
Had the Magpies lost that game, Arsenal would’ve finished in the top four with a victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium on the final day, but now Spurs are massively in the driving seat.
It isn’t all thanks to Newcastle, because Tottenham destroyed their North London rivals last week to pile the pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side, pressure that they evidently couldn’t handle.
But even with that derby-day smashing, the Italian manager still needed Eddie Howe and the Magpies to help him and his troops out and they have done just that, probably resulting in the Lilywhites getting back into the big time – and Conte landing himself one hell of a bonus.in the process.
