Newcastle United are now the richest football club in the world, and as you can imagine, this has led to plenty of speculation about who they’re going to sign.
After a major financial takeover, most clubs go out and make one jaw-dropper of a marquee signing. Robinho joining Manchester City in 2008 was unthinkable at the time, Zlatan Ibrahimovic joining PSG in 2012 marked the dawning of a new era and while Anzhi Makhachkala never truly became a superpower, their acquisition of Samuel Eto’o in 2011 raised a number of eyebrows.
It has been suggested that Newcastle may build slowly to begin with, the likes of James Tarkowski and Jesse Lingard have been touted as potential first signings, but according to ESPN, they may well be about to land their marquee name.
Indeed, the American outlet reckon that the Magpies are keen on Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard.
The Belgian is undoubtedly a big name. After all, he’s a two-time PFA Player of the Year winner, and he could be the Magpies’ version of Robinho.
There are obvious parallels to be drawn between Hazard and Robinho, they’re both tricky attackers who would be signing from Real Madrid for big money.
However, aside from the fact that Hazard is a brilliant player when he’s at his best, this would certainly be a statement signing.
Just imagine Hazard rocking up at St James’ Park as the Tyneside outfit’s first big arrival. They’d have nabbed Real Madrid’s club-record signing and have brought in a player that is feared amongst the Premier League due to his exploits with Chelsea.
This would certainly be a signing that would make the Premier League sit up and take notice.
