Newcastle United want Matheus Nunes and have made an approach to sign him – but so have Premier League rivals Everton.
Newcastle have their first signing of the summer wrapped up in left back Matt Targett following his successful loan stay.
The Magpies are seeking more reinforcements this summer and a number of midfielders have been linked.
Lucas Paqueta has been the most popular name but that would be a very expensive deal.
Newcastle may instead look elsewhere and they may now have a target over in Portugal – though he may not be any cheaper.
Newcastle United want Matheus Nunes
Foot Mercato report that Newcastle have made an approach to sign Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer.
It’s claimed that Newcastle have attempted to tee up a summer deal for Nunes but face major competition.
Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also understood to have approach Sporting about a deal.
That means there is a major Premier League battle on the cards for Nunes and it may not end there.
Manchester City are also understood to be interested in Nunes and opened talks about a potential deal back in March.
Tottenham Hotspur even in enquired in March too, meaning Sporting are eyeing huge money.

Foot Mercato’s latest report states that Sporting have already rejected a bid of €45million (£38.5million) for Nunes and will hold out for his full release clause of €60million (£51.5million).
That would be a similar price tag with Paqueta so Newcastle will face a tough choice this summer.
Whilst Paqueta is more of a number 10, Nunes is an energetic box-to-box midfielder who can get up and down the pitch to great effect.
Nunes, 23, looks to be a real talent for the future and has recently switched his international allegiance from Brazil to Portugal.
This is an exciting pursuit for Newcastle but winning the race won’t be easy at all with so much competition on the horizon.
