Newcastle United are making enquiries over the availability of Liverpool striker Danny Ings but face Premier League competition, according to Bleacher Report.

Ings, 27, has endured a difficult spell with Liverpool since his move to Anfield from Burnley in July 2015, with two separate cruciate ligament injuries limiting him to just 12 senior appearances for the Reds.

However, the one-time England international has been working on his fitness with Liverpool’s Under-23 side, and has made seven appearances this season as well as appearing as a substitute in the EFL Cup against Leicester City.

Now, Bleacher Report claim Newcastle are interested in signing the striker in January with Newcastle enquiring over his availability, but will have to fight Southampton for his signature.

It is believed that the Saints are also asking Liverpool over whether Jurgen Klopp would be willing to see him leave, as he remains way down the pecking order on Merseyside.

The likes of Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Dom Solanke are ahead of Ings in Klopp’s thinking, and Ings desperately needs first-team football to complete his recovery from a long injury lay-off.

Newcastle need a new source of goals in the Premier League, with Rafa Benitez’s side finding the back of the net just 10 times in as many games and Ings could be the man the Magpies turn to.

However, with a contract until June 2020, it remains to be seen how much Liverpool will charge for Ings’ services ahead of the January transfer window.
