Newcastle United have made their first steps in trying to sign Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha, who is set to leave the Italian club for free this summer.

According to La Lazio Siamo Noi, the Magpies have initiated contact with the Albanian goalkeeper over a potential signing, with Serie A side Torino also interested in the 27-year-old shot-stopper.

Strakosha has been a key player for Lazio since 2016, though the Greek-born goalkeeper is now set to depart the top-flight Italian side with his contract expiring this summer and interest growing in the shot-stopper.

As per the report, Strakosha is yet to make a decision on which club he wants to join this summer, though Newcastle’s early approach for the keeper could have an effect on who lands the Lazio star.

The Magpies are set to sign a new no. 1 this summer, with the likes of Dean Henderson and Bernd Leno also being linked to Newcastle in the previous weeks, though Strakosha could be the favourite to sign for the St. James Park side.

Indeed, the keeper is experienced with top-flight football after commanding the Lazio posts for years, and with Strakosha leaving for free, Newcastle will be able to offer the Albanian a hefty wage should the Toon look to sign the 27-year-old.

Newcastle’s business this summer will likely be some of the most interesting and exciting in Europe, yet the signing of Strakosha could be one of the best the Toon make should they go through with the move.

At 27, Strakosha is hitting the prime of his career, and with Newcastle eager to sign a new starting goalkeeper, the Lazio star could be a smart option given his contract situation and his ‘extraordinary’ qualities.
