Newcastle loanee Christian Atsu responds when asked about his future

Christian Atsu has insisted that he is not thinking about his future until the end of the season, but certainly did not close the door on a return to Newcastle United, the Chronicle reports.

Atsu is currently on loan at St James’ Park from Chelsea. The Chronicle reports that the Magpies will get first refusal on the 25-year-old if they secure promotion out of the Championship, which is certainly looking likely with a handful of games to go.

And while Atsu insisted that wrapping up promotion is the priority and his only focus currently, he certainly did not rule out coming back in some capacity.

“I am just focused on the coming games,” he said, as reported by the Chronicle.

“We have a number of games left and we want to win promotion.

“I am just focusing on that.

“We just want to keep hoping and fighting this season, then we will think about this.”

The Ghana international has done well since arriving last summer, contributing three goals and two assists in 28 Championship appearances, having often been used as more of an impact substitute with 17 of his appearances coming from the bench.

And it could certainly be argued that he would have a role to play if Newcastle do return to the Premier League, having shown that he can make an impact in the big games.

Few fixtures this season seem to have been as important as the Magpies’ clash with Brighton in February, and it appeared that the Seagulls would be extending their lead at the top as they led 1-0 late on.

However, Atsu was pivotal turning the game around as he set up both goals. And while the first was completely unintentional – his poorly-hit shot found Mo Diame’s heel for one of the most bizarre goals of the campaign – the assist for Newcastle’s winner saw Atsu demonstrate some excellent winger play, getting down the line before squaring for Ayoze Perez in the middle.
