If Newcastle United are to sign Marcos Alonso this summer, then he may have to forget about his Sunderland allegiances.
According to The Mirror (14/06, p72), Newcastle are keen on the Chelsea full-back, as Steve Bruce eyes potential targets for the summer.
Alonso would surely enhance the quality of Newcastle’s squad if he was to arrive at St. James’ Park.
But his past comments about Sunderland may not go down particularly well with his potential new employers.
Alonso spent six months on loan at Sunderland in 2014, where he impressed.
And he has only ever spoken positively about Newcastle’s biggest rivals.
“The Stadium of Light is a great stadium and I have great memories,” he told the Chronicle earlier this year.

“It’s a very good crowd – I think one of the best in England.
“I have nothing but great memories and I enjoyed my time very much there.
“I like to follow always the teams I have previously played for.
“I follow Real Madrid a lot, I follow Bolton as well.
“But Sunderland is a special club for me. Even if I was only there for six months, it feels like I was there a lot longer.”
Considering the happy memories Alonso has of the North East a move to Newcastle could well appeal, if it becomes an option.
Alonso has made 11 Premier League appearances for Chelsea this term, scoring four goals from left-back.
