Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is renowned for his preference of playing a 4-2-3-1 system.

It is becoming more and more clear that Rafa Benitez is looking to strengthen his attacking midfield this summer – even more so than adding a new talismanic striker to the Newcastle United squad.

Benitez finally brought back Chelsea winger Kenedy on loan until the end of the season after an excellent spell on Tyneside last term, in which he had a hand in four goals.

Now, the club have been linked with a number 10 who made two appearances at the World Cup and a former Toon winger, that would combine perfectly with Kenedy to form the ‘three’ in Benitez’s favoured 4-2-3-1 system.

Indeed, Newcastle are in the hunt to re-sign Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace (Shields Gazette), while The Sun have claimed that Uruguay playmaker Giorgian de Arrascaeta is an £18million target for The Toon.

Townsend has long been a target for Benitez since the Spaniard was forced to sell him to Palace following the club’s relegation into the Championship, and would provide vast improvement on Matt Ritchie. Sky Sports say Townsend is valued at £17million.

Ayoze Perez was in and out of form during the 2017-18 campaign and though he finished the campaign strongly, Newcastle need a better number 10 and de Arrascaeta is just that.

The Uruguay international boasts the flair, vision and eye for goal that Newcastle are desperately crying out for, as Benitez looks to bring in the players that can help Newcastle improve on their excellent tenth-placed finish.

With de Arrascaeta in the middle of Benitez’s attacking midfield, and Kenedy and Townsend on either side, Newcastle would boast one of the best attacking midfield trio’s in the Premier League and would certainly be worth the combined £35million.

It would certainly take the Toon to the next level, and see them climb into the Premier League’s top 10, whereas last season the club massively overachieved with their current stars.
