Borussia Dortmund’s title hopes appear to be over after a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich on Tuesday afternoon.
Bayern went into the game four points clear of Dortmund, so Lucien Favre’s side needed to pick up a win over their bitter rivals yesterday.
Dortmund didn’t have the famous Yellow Wall to cheer them on as football continues to be played behind closed doors, and maybe that played its part.
Joshua Kimmich’s first-half goal proved to be the winner, handing Bayern a 1-0 win. Dortmund came so, so close to scoring on a number of occasions, but couldn’t find the net.
With Dortmund now seven points adrift at the top, and questions hang over the future of Favre. Recent reports from Foot Mercato suggested that Dortmund have already decided to part ways with their Swiss boss this summer.
Favre has won almost 62% of his games as Dortmund boss, since arriving in 2018. However, Favre suggested to Sky after Tuesday’s defeat that he knows how the rumour mill works, and he will clarify his future ‘in a few weeks’.
“It’s been said here for months,” said Favre. “I don’t read the newspapers, but I know how it works. I’ll talk about it in a few weeks,” he added.
Sky add that Dortmund have been in contact with ex-Bayern boss Niko Kovac since the beginning of 2020, and he could replace Favre very soon.
This is all very interesting for Newcastle United. ESPN recently reported that Favre is a target for Newcastle’s potential new owners, should their takeover go through.
If Favre leaves Dortmund soon, he will free himself up for a move to St James’ Park. That would certainly be more appealing than paying compensation to the German side, so Newcastle may well be keeping close tabs on his situation at Signal Iduna Park.
