Newcastle United could be set for new owners with Mike Ashley prepared to sell.
Ashley has received heavy criticism from some sections of the Newcastle fanbase for what has perceived to have been poor handling of club affairs, and many of the Toon Army would welcome a change of ownership.
The Tyneside outfit have actually begun their 2017/18 campaign in respectable fashion, recording three wins and two draws from their opening eight Premier league games, and currently sit comfortably in ninth position in the table.
Lee though, who made 382 appearances for the Magpies, explained why he believes that now is the right time for new owners to take over at Newcastle, when speaking exclusively to Jim White on talkSPORT:
“It is good news if he actually sells it. It has a been long time now with Mike Ashley and maybe people will say he helped us through a stage where the club needed help, but now it needs to be put in someone else’s hands who has got the money to push the club forward and get it to where the fans want it to be, which is not relegation, promotion, relegation, promotion. Rafa Benitez has hardly spent any money. Our record signing is still Michael Owen from 15 years ago. Watford have beaten that, Bournemouth have beaten that. Newcastle need to spend a lot of money to get them back to where they should be in the Premier League.”
Ashley has been at the helm at Newcastle since 2007 after purchasing a 77 per cent stake in the club, and has overseen two relegations during his time on Tyneside.
And just like Rob Lee said, Newcastle fans will be hoping that any potential new owners can bring more stability to their beloved club.
