The Newcastle United winger has struggled to establish himself on Tyneside.

Retired Peruvian football player and currently assistant coach of Peru national football team Nolberto Solano speaks during an exclusive interview on June 21, 2018 in Moscow, Russia.

Ex-Newcastle star Nolberto Solano spoke exclusively to the Chronicle about his former side’s current plight, and suggested that Jacob Murphy has the potential to drag the Toon up the table, if he puts his mind to it.

The 23-year-old joined the Magpies from Norwich City in the summer of 2017 for around £12 million, but he has struggled to establish himself on Tyneside, chalking up just one goal and a single assist in 33 appearances in all competitions.

Newcastle have been far from an attacking, free-flowing team over the past 12 months, however, and that surely hasn’t helped Murphy express himself in the manner that he would have liked.

Solano, who spent eight years at St James’ Park during two separate spells, insisted that the pacey winger has what it takes to reach the very top, if he applies himself correctly, when speaking exclusively to the Chronicle:

“For me Jacob Murphy could be a key player for United if he puts his mind to it. He’s got the pace and the potential, believe me. There were a couple of situations on Saturday where he just needed to look up and see what the options were. But he’ll get better because he’s got a good attitude.”

Newcastle currently sit in 19th spot in the Premier League table, having taken just one point from their opening five league outings, and they could really do with Murphy finding his best form sooner rather than later.
