Burnley could give Eddie Howe another boost in his transfer plans to improve Newcastle, as Sean Dyche is considering Sheffield United’s Chris Basham to replace James Tarkowski.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who report Burnley are monitoring Basham’s situation at Bramall Lane. The 33-year-old has started to reconsider his future in South Yorkshire as the Blades are yet to offer him a new contract, with just five-months left on his current terms.

Basham has stayed at Sheffield United despite previous interest as the 33-year-old is happy at Bramall Lane. He has also expressed his desire to help the Blades return to the Premier League following last season’s relegation. But the club are yet to make him an official offer.

Newcastle, who Basham supported in his youth, and Wolves had explored transfers with Sheffield United last summer. But they baulked at paying the Blades’ valuation at the time.

Burnley eye Basham with Premier League relegation in mind

Now, Burnley are considering raiding Sheffield United as the Clarets hold a long-standing admiration for Basham. Dyche is also in the market for centre-halves with Tarkowski and Ben Mee likewise out of contract in June.

The Turf Moor hierarchy feel Basham can be a reliable option in the winter if they capitalise on his situation. They recognise the veteran can be a bargain capable of helping Dyche seal their top-flight survival, or to provide quality in the Championship should they drop down.

Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder is likewise keen on Basham. But a deal for his former Blades defender is currently unlikely, leaving the door open for Burnley to swoop.

Dyche to hand Howe second Newcastle transfer boost with Tarkowski

Burnley signing Basham from Sheffield United could also offer Newcastle another transfer boost in Tarkowski. The Toon have already bought Chris Wood from the Clarets for £25m.

The Magpies have kept tabs on Turf Moor as they tackle their first window with Howe and Saudi-led owners. Newcastle’s plans have also included Tarkowski, per The Telegraph. They add he would like to complete a transfer to St James’ Park but Burnley need a replacement.

Dyche is extremely reluctant to sell the defender, despite his contract expiring in June. The Evening Standard also report the Clarets want £20m for the two-cap England international.
