Reports from Alfredo Pedulla in Italy earlier this week suggested that Newcastle were showing a keen interest in Asllani.
It was noted that AC Milan are keen on Asllani too but Newcastle were setting up a meeting to discuss terms over a deal.
Asllani, 20, has emerged as one of the top young talents in Serie A this past season.
The Albanian midfielder played 23 times in Italy’s top flight whilst picking up one goal and one assist.
Albania national team director Edoardo Reja – a former Serie A boss – even feels that Asllani is an ‘excellent’ talent.
Newcastle may feel that Asllani is one for the future, a midfielder they can bring in to compete initially but then potentially become a star down the line.
Yet if Newcastle thought they would have it easy in this transfer race, they are very much mistaken.
L’Interista now claim that Newcastle’s interest in Asllani has jolted Inter Milan into life.
It’s suggested that Inter have wanted Asllani for a long time now and news of Newcastle’s pursuit has reached the San Siro.
Inter don’t want to miss out and with talks underway, they are expected to meet with Empoli very soon to thrash out a deal for the midfielder.
It would then ultimately be up to Asllani to decide whether he prefers Inter or Newcastle, and the prestige of an Italian giant may just win out over Newcastle’s exciting but still burgeoning project.
