It has been reported that Newcastle have made an enquiry about signing Maitland-Niles from Premier League rivals Arsenal.
However, according to the report, the Magpies have been put off by the Gunners asking for £25 million as transfer fee for the 23-year-old, who can operate as a midfielder, winger, full-back or wing-back.
The report has added that Arsenal have also turned down an offer of £15 million from Wolverhampton Wanderers for the Englishman.
Good signing for Newcastle United?
Described as “a very useful player with great speed, technically gifted, a good passer of the ball” by Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta in Football.London in January 2020, Maitland-Niles would make Newcastle stronger.
The 23-year-old’s versatility means that Newcastle manager Steve Bruce would be able to deploy him in a number of positions.
However, £25 million does seem a bit too much for a 23-year-old who is not always a regular in the Arsenal first team, especially in the current economic climate caused by the global health crisis.
