Malcolm Dix has revealed that he has told Amanda Staveley to start giving Newcastle United legends a bigger role in the club.

The Mirror reported in April that former Kevin Keegan is being considered for an ambassadorial role at the club he played for and managed, if Mike Ashley sells the Magpies.

Staveley is spearheading the Saudi group poised to complete a £300 million takeover at Newcastle, though there have been a series of delays so far.

And Dix, a vice-life president of the St James’s Park club, has told The Chronicle that he has written to the businesswoman with his thoughts on bringing some familiar faces back to the North-East.

He said: “I have spoken to Amanda Staveley on the telephone and she asked me to send my thoughts on paper which I did via Steve Wraith. One of the calls I made was to get the old players involved.

“I have read newspaper reports seeing the likes of Les Ferdinand and Kevin Keegan linked in some way as ambassadors which would be nice.”

Dix also revealed that he has come face-to-face with Ashley on a number of occasions, but claimed that the Newcastle owner was reluctant to discuss football-related matters with him.

He added: “He has always been pleasant when I have approached him. I tried to engage with him in football discussion but he carefully avoided it and said it wasn’t something he wanted to discuss.”

The latest delay relates to a new piece of evidence that the Premier League has received in regards to broadcast piracy claims which have been levelled at the consortium.

But The Daily Mail reported that although Ashley was growing ‘increasingly frustrated’ with the setbacks, he still expected a deal to go through.
