Chris Wood has underlined his delight at joining Newcastle United with his first post as a Toon player on Instagram. The striker also commented on the quality of his new teammates, and the current fight against relegation.
Wood, 30, has joined Newcastle for a fee believed to be in the region of £25million. That is, after the Toon activated a release clause in his Burnley contract. Newcastle had been desperate to make a striker signing.
Indeed, The Toon take on Watford on Saturday afternoon and without Callum Wilson – due to injury – the club’s potentially most-important game of the season so far might have been played without a forward.
But the club have moved quickly, not only to sign a player with 50 goals in 153 Premier League games – but also to weaken a direct rival. Wood is that man, and he took to Instagram with a long-winded message to fans.
Wood another wise investment by Newcastle owners, pre-Watford
Yes, of course, the new owners will be keen to build for the future. But the current situation is too much of a problem to simply ignore, and continue building years down the line. Improvement had to be made now.
What Newcastle’s hierarchy have done, is dramatically improve the team with the addition of two new signings – that know the Premier League, know relegation scraps, and will hit the ground running because of it.
Wood improves a Wilson-less side. When Wilson returns, it will be interesting to see how Newcastle play – though for now, it was important Newcastle brought the New Zealand ace to Tyneside quickly.
