Bruno Guimaraes starred for Newcastle in their 1-0 win over Wolves on Friday night, a win that almost ends any chance of the Toon being dragged into a relegation scrap – and Alan Shearer has included him in his TOTW.
Bruno, 24, was handed just his fourth start for Newcastle since completing a big-money move from Lyon to Newcastle in January – for a fee believed to be in the best part of £40million. He lasted the entire 90 minutes.
It was a superb win, as Newcastle relied on their defence to keep out an impressive Wolves side that looked uncharacteristically sluggish – and did not pass the ball quick enough. Chris Wood provided the difference.
He won a penalty off of Jose Sa before picking himself up and dusting himself down – scoring. But Shearer praised Bruno: “In his first start at St James’ Park, he was the best player on the pitch as Newcastle beat Wolves.”
Shearer on Bruno: Newcastle star has got to start remaining seven
It has been a strange start for Bruno at Newcastle, shining when given the chance and scoring a stunning goal against Southampton. But Eddie Howe seems to be biding his time with the Brazil international.
However, his performance for Newcastle on Friday evening has got to be proof that he is a level above any midfielder Newcastle already have. He needs to start week in, week out, something Howe should have done earlier.
