Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter in the wake of their narrow defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday, and while many of the squad were praised by the supporters, the fans were less than impressed by what they saw from Dwight Gayle.

The Magpies went into their clash with Spurs at Wembley looking to bring an end to a run of three defeats that has taken a little of the gloss off what has been a sensational end to a campaign that could still conclude with a top-half finish in their first year back in the Premier League.

But while Newcastle had little more to play for than pride and Spurs needed a win to guarantee a top four finish, it was Rafa Benitez’s men who created the better chances for much of the game and looked impressive against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

They may have had some of the better chances, but it was Harry Kane who decided the game as he scored a lovely goal to ensure that Spurs will be playing in next season’s Champions League.

While one striker shone however, his opposite number saw his performance get absolutely slated by the Newcastle supporters on social media after the game. Gayle has struggled throughout the campaign having only scored five league goals, and off the back of this showing, a number of fans are imploring Benitez to make substantial changes in the striker department during the summer.

Many felt that the game highlighted that Gayle – who earns £40,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – simply is not good enough to lead the line for a team that is looking to keep themselves well away from the bottom three in the Premier League.
