Several Newcastle fans have expressed their desire to see Dwight Gayle sold at the end of the season after his performance during the Magpies’ disappointing defeat to West Brom on Saturday.

Newcastle appear to have taken their foot off the gas in the last two games, losing 1-0 away at Everton and being beaten by the same scoreline when the Premier League’s bottom side travelled to St James’ Park at the weekend.

The performance certainly suggested that Rafa Benitez’s men have largely switched off now that top flight survival is secure, with a number of players falling short of the standards that they were setting just a few weeks previously.

Gayle was certainly one of those who left the fans underwhelmed. The £10 million signing – fee reported by the Guardian – was superb during their promotion-winning campaign last term, but has simply been unable to replicate that form back at the highest level.

He has scored just five goals in 32 league appearances this season, and his performance against West Brom left a number of Magpies fans urging the club to sell the striker during the upcoming window.

The supporters feel that Gayle looks a million dollars in the division below, but is not good enough to be considered the leading marksman for a team looking to establish itself in the Premier League. And as it would not be a surprise if a number of Championship sides were willing to pay very decent money for his signature in the summer, many fans feel it may be time to move the former Crystal Palace man on in the near future.

Here is the best of the reaction…
