Newcastle United have had their fair share of issues in the Premier League this term but there has certainly been one positive point in the emergence of Sean Longstaff.

The 21-year-old academy graduate has taken to the first team like a duck to water, impressing in his seven senior appearances for Rafael Benitez’s side.

Longstaff was particularly impressive in the 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town last time out, the Chronicle Live giving him a solid 8 out of 10 rating for his dominant display in midfield.

The North Shields ace is currently playing ahead of more established players like Ki Sung-yueng, Mohamed Diame and Jonjo Shelvey, and has been tipped for an England call-up by Benitez.

When it comes to proving yourself on Tyneside though, few opinions will be more valued than those of club legend Alan Shearer, who has been singing Longstaff’s praises in recent weeks, such as in this post-match tweet.

In his latest Premier League Team of the Week, Shearer named Longstaff in his XI and said of the youngster on the official PL website: “So impressive again and ran the middle of the park.”

The Premier League Twitter account also posted a graphic of Shearer’s TOTW and some Newcastle fans reacted positively to the tweet:
