The Magpies have unveiled a home shirt supposedly similar to that worn by the Fairs Cup-winning side from 1969.
Newcastle United have unveiled their new home kit ahead of the 2019-20 season but a number of Toon Army faithful were critical in responses to the club’s Twitter announcement.
As per the official Magpies statement on their website, the 50th anniversary of the club’s Inter-Cities Fairs Cup win has been cited as the inspiration behind the design.
The new kit features “a familiar black round-neck collar with white trim, while a tonal crest will adorn the Magpies’ classic black and white stripes”, in a style supposedly similar to that worn by the Fairs Cup-winning side back in 1969.
While the 1969 home kit’s stripes were fairly slim, featuring four white stripes on the front, the new offering has two broad white stripes, something which some Newcastle fans called the club out on.
Other supporters, meanwhile, remained bemused with the lack of communication regarding the future of the club’s ownership – not to mention that of manager Rafael Benitez, whose contract is set to expire soon – and made their feelings known.
