The Magpies travel to the south coast for Saturday night’s Premier League game and referee Dean will be the man in the middle.

Newcastle United have announced that Mike Dean has been appointed as the referee for their upcoming Premier League game away at Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Magpies will take to the Amex Stadium on Saturday night safe in the knowledge that they will be in the top flight next season, with 18th-placed Cardiff City 10 points behind and just three games left.

Brighton, meanwhile, are still very much battling for their Premier League status, though with a three-point gap between themselves and the Bluebirds, plus a game in hand on Neil Warnock’s side, it’s not too critical for the Seagulls, at least for the time being.

Newcastle confirmed that Dean will be taking charge of his third game involving the Magpies this term, having already officiated the 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at St. James’ Park in December and the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth in March.

Against Wolves, the Wirral official dismissed full back DeAndre Yedlin and booked seven others, while in the Cherries clash, five yellow cards were handed out, including to Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez.

Here is how some Newcastle fans reacted to the club’s Twitter post featuring the announcement:

This season, across 33 games in the Premier League, Championship, FA Cup and Carabao Cup and League Two, Dean has issued a total of 139 yellow cards and 11 red cards, and earlier this month he handed out his 100th PL red card, against Ashley Young of Manchester United.
