Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez is in the running for April’s Premier League Player of the Month after his exploits last month.

The 25-year-old scored five goals for the Magpies in April – the winner in the 1-0 victory over Leicester City, a hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Southampton, and the opening goal of last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Perez’s strikes helped Newcastle get over the line and secure their place in the Premier League this season following a difficult campaign in which they were still just one point above the relegation zone in mid-February (BBC Sport).

Indeed, nobody in the Premier League scored more times during the month than the Spaniard, while April also saw him break into the top ten of Newcastle’s all-time Premier League top goalscorers list (official Newcastle website).

Perez took to Twitter to urge fans to vote for him, with voting open until 6pm (BST) on Thursday 2 May:
