Newcastle United have posted a Twitter message paying tribute to Aaron Hughes after the former Magpies ace announced his retirement at the age of 39.
Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis told reporters after the nation’s Euro 2020 win over Belarus in Borisov that Hughes had told the players of his plans to hang up his boots (BBC Sport).
On Wednesday afternoon, the full-back took to Twitter with a message in which he himself confirmed the news, stating that he had “lived the dream.”
Hughes came through the ranks at St James’ Park and made close to 300 appearances for the Tyneside outfit between 1997 and 2005, including numerous Champions League games.
The defender then joined Aston Villa in 2005 for a reported £1.35million (Transfermarkt) and spent two seasons in the West Midlands before upping sticks and moving to Fulham.
Hughes was on the books of the Cottagers until 2014, after which he had stints at Queens Park Rangers, Brighton & Hove Albion, Melbourne City, Kerala Blasters and finally Hearts.
