Newcastle United signed Jamaal Lascelles to a new contract on Thursday.

Newcastle United gave fans something to cheer about on Thursday morning with a new contract for Jamaal Lascelles, but not everybody is quite so convinced that it’s good news.
The Magpies have endured a dismal season so far, as they have yet to win a single game, have scored the second-fewest amount of goals in the Premier League, and have failed to score in four of their last five games.
Manager Rafael Benitez’s future is still unclear with his contract ending next summer, whilst Mike Ashley continues to run the club without spending much money and many fans remain completely disillusioned with life at St. James’ Park.
Fans haven’t had much to shout about of late, but Newcastle did confirm on Thursday morning that centre back Jamaal Lascelles has signed a new six-year contract until 2024, tying his future to the club.
Lascelles, 24, joined Newcastle from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2014, and having spent his first year back on loan at Forest, he has become a great leader in the heart of the Newcastle defence.

Believed to be a target for Chelsea and Tottenham, Lascelles’ new deal should put fans at ease – but some still believe he will be sold in the January transfer window.
Supporters took to Twitter to suggest that the new deal is just to get more money for Lascelles in January, with many convinced that an exit will take place, and predicting that his deal contains a release clause to move on in 2019.
