Newcastle’s players continue to struggle to prove that they have not subconsciously taken their foot off the gas now that Premier League safety is assured as they were beaten 2-1 by Watford on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into the game with the Hornets off the back of two defeats after a four-game winning run that ensured that the Magpies would be playing top flight football again next year.

Unfortunately for the travelling fans at Vicarage Road, they had to watch a poor first-half display which saw Watford take a 2-0 lead into the break. And while Newcastle were much improved after the interval, they could only find one goal with Ayoze Perez scoring 10 minutes into the second-half.

It was Javier Manquillo who put the delightful cross in that allowed Perez to halve the deficit. And while that was undoubtedly a highlight for the former Sunderland full-back, it was a rare glimmer of quality in a performance that was absolutely slated by the Newcastle fans on social media after the game.

The £4.5 million signing – fee reported by The Sun – has struggled since coming in back in the summer, and failed to justify Benitez’s decision to pick him over DeAndre Yedlin at right-back.

While his crossing ability was praised by the supporters, many were adamant that he is simply not good enough to feature for a Newcastle side that will be hoping to build on the promise that they have shown this season, and several have asked for the 24-year-old to be moved on during the summer.
