Newcastle United fans should remember Dwight Gayle’s heroics as Aleksandar Mitrovic goes from strength to strength at Fulham.
On Tuesday, Newcastle United fans on Twitter berated Rafael Benitez’s decision to let Aleksandar Mitrovic join Fulham on loan in January.
The Serbian hitman is going from strength to strength in the Championship and scored twice last night to enhance the Cottagers’ promotion prospects and make it five goals in seven games for him.
In contrast, Newcastle are fighting for their Premier League lives and time will tell whether Dwight Gayle and Joselu – who have eight league goals between them this season – are going to score the goals which saves them.
Benitez only gave Mitrovic six Premier League appearances this season – all from the bench – but Newcastle fans need to remember that the 24-year-old’s form in the Championship means absolutely nothing.
Scoring bags of goals in the second tier does not mean that Mitrovic would have done the same with the Magpies in the Premier League had Benitez not let him go.
Newcastle supporters should know more than most about the gulf in class which exists between the two divisions, given that Gayle, who has five goals in 26 Premier League games this season, managed a whopping 23 goals in 26 matches in the second tier last term.
It was always going to reflect badly on the Spanish manager if Mitrovic hit the ground running in the Championship, but his form down there has no bearing on what he might’ve done in the top tier because, as Gayle has proven, the Premier League is a different animal.
