Newcastle United fans are far from happy with Rio Ferdinand.
Newcastle United lost 2-1 at Chelsea on Saturday night, but it’s pundit Rio Ferdinand who has made himself a surprise villain with Magpies fans.
Pedro had put Chelsea 1-0 up at Stamford Bridge, and whilst Ciaran Clark pulled Newcastle level, Willian ended up winning it for the hosts in the second half.
With Burnley and Southampton winning as well as Cardiff City drawing yesterday, Newcastle have now slipped back into the Premier League relegation zone.
Fans are understandably unhappy, but Ferdinand suggested to BT Sport that Newcastle fans should be happy with being a Premier League club and should even thank Mike Ashley.
Ferdinand praised Ashley for spending ‘£50million of his own money’ to get Newcastle promoted in 2017, failing to mention that the sales of Georginio Wijnaldum, Andros Townsend, Moussa Sissoko, Remy Cabella, Daryl Janmaat that summer totalled far more than that.
Ashley’s reign has become famed now for a lack of spending, especially in January was he rolls out the famous line that he’s close to selling the club just before the transfer window opens, meaning he won’t spend on new signings.
Rafael Benitez is working with one hand tied behind his back at this point, and there again appears to be a lack of funds available this month.
If Newcastle fans were unhappy last night, then they won’t have been impressed this morning as Ferdinand tweeted the club by sarcastically saying that Newcastle’s situation was ‘terrible’ given that they’re ‘turning profit’ and playing in the Premier League.
Newcastle fans have hit back with fury, suggesting that Ferdinand’s comments are ‘disappointing’ and ‘lack class’ as he continues to flippantly address the issues of fans who have been left frustrated for a long, long time.
Other supporters pointed out that the club isn’t turning profit, Ashley is, urging him to remember that, as a fan, you want to see your club succeeding or at least aspiring to success – something Newcastle seemingly aren’t doing.
