Sunderland may be flying high in League One at the minute, but they’re not doing quite so well in the local rivalry stakes right now.

The obvious point is that, even though things are better than they were a few months ago, fact of the matter is they’re in the third tier, while Middlesbrough are in the Championship and Newcastle United are in the Premier League.

Then, if we’re talking the most recent derbies, the Magpies’ reserves have claimed a 5-0 win over Sunderland’s second string this season, while last term, they knocked the Black Cats out of the Premier League International Cup.

Newcastle also got one over on their rivals in the social media stakes last week when the Checkatrade Trophy saw them announce on Twitter that they had been drawn against “League One Sunderland”.

On Monday, Netflix announced the impending arrival of a new series chronicling the Wearside club’s recent struggles, entitled “Sunderland Til I Die”.

Coming on 14 December, it has been dubbed a “heroic, heartbreaking, and essential watch” regardless of “whichever team you support”.
