Newcastle United are reportedly pursuing striker Josef Martinez.
Newcastle United splashed out for one striker this past summer in Joelinton, but they may still be keen on another in January.
The Magpies have seen Joelinton score just once in his first five Premier League games, and whilst he’s showing promise, more firepower may be needed.
Now, The Chronicle report that Newcastle are keeping tabs on Atlanta United striker Josef Martinez, putting him on a list of potential January transfer targets.
Martinez has smashed 31 goals in 34 games for Atlanta this season, and 35 goals in 39 outings last term having become one of the deadliest strikers in Major League Soccer.
A move would see him reunite with Newcastle playmaker Miguel Almiron, who left Atlanta for a move to St James’ Park in January of this year, and it may just help Almiron hit top form again.
26-year-old Martinez – who plays up front with ex-Newcastle striker Salomon Rondon for Venezuela – didn’t exactly impress at Torino though, and that may be cause for concern.
Some Newcastle fans don’t think adding another MLS player is the answer for the Magpies, believing that the club’s scouts are just playing FIFA 18 and picking out good players from that game.
Others believe a move for Martinez has been a long time coming, with fans desperate to see him join forces with Almiron again, and the general consensus is that this would be a great move for Steve Bruce and co at the right price.
