Newcastle United are reportedly set to prioritise a move for Watford striker Troy Deeney during this window.

Newcastle fans have been reacting on Twitter to reports coming from ESPN which have suggested that Rafa Benitez has made Watford captain Troy Deeney his number one striker target for the January transfer window – and it is safe to say that the Toon Army are generally less than impressed with the reports.

Newcastle find themselves in a precarious position in the Premier League. And having only scored 20 goals in 22 league games, it would certainly appear that letting January pass without signing a new goalscorer would be a massive gamble from Benitez.

And it appears that if he gets his way, it will be Deeney who fills the void. ESPN reports that Newcastle have made the Hornets ace their priority striker target for this month – and have already made an enquiry for the 29-year-old.

ESPN adds that Marco Silva could potentially consider selling Deeney – who has struggled for regular starts and has just two goals to his name in the top flight this term.

The news that the Magpies are chasing Deeney has not gone down well however, with many Newcastle fans taking to social media to express their disappointment that he is so high on Benitez’s list of targets.

Given his disappointing form this season and the fact that he would presumably not have that long left near the top of his game, many Newcastle fans seemed to feel that the club would be better off targeting a younger, more prolific forward – though there has been some support for a pursuit of Deeney.

Here is the best of the reaction…
