The Newcastle United midfielder could be set for a new club this summer.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has decided to omit Jack Colback from his 25-man Premier League squad, and the news has prompted plenty of discussion on social media.

The midfielder featured 34 times for the Magpies last season, including 29 times in their title-winning league campaign. However he regularly came in for criticism from a section of the fans and it was always hard to imagine him being a regular start now they are back in the Premier League.

The arrival of Mikel Merino – who has impressed during his pre-season cameo performances – means Colback will struggle for minutes. But if Benitez has opted to overlook him all together his future is surely away from St. James’ Park.

Colback has racked up a total of 102 matches for Newcastle, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists in the process. Despite that he is yet to win over everyone and having done a job in the second tier, he now looks set to move on.

The former Sunderland player should have plenty of suitors in the Championship if he is sold, and if the latest report is correct Benitez could let him leave for less now he has been deemed surplus to requirements.
